Child Birth Brachial plexus injury is a loss of movement or weakness of the arm. It occurs when the collection of nerves around the shoulder (called the brachial plexus) are damaged during birth. The nerves of the brachial plexus can be injured during a difficult delivery. The injury may be caused by: A) The infant’s head and neck pulling toward the side as the shoulders pass through the birth canal B)Pulling on the infant’s shoulders during a head-first delivery C)Pressure on the baby’s raised arms during a breech (feet-first) delivery.
I saw a 6 year old child who was born with the Brachial plexus injury. He does not have full range of motion on his left shoulder. Even though his parents have already put him in the training to improve the shoulder movement range. And also physical therapy. There still some limitation such as raising his upper arms so as the turning the arm.
The child has 4 sessions of acupuncture in my office. Result: his left and right arms can symmetrically raise up.
Both hands can reach same height from back. Both hands can turn almost symmetrically inside and outside.
